About Carol Joy Shannon
Carol Joy was blessed with an adventurous life full of color and stories, boats and travel, far flung outposts, family and friends. With children grown, after another round of adventure that included a 34' sailboat from Venice to Istanbul, and milking sheep in Tuscany, she returned to the South, found her best partner and true passion. Two decades later, they've moved back to the Lowcountry, which has influenced a whole new genre of uplifting landscapes and light scenes.
Carol Joy's large body of work includes the 100+ City Series, "where the wild things are" (the ongoing wildlife paintings which have shown at the Southeastern Wildlife Expo), and the "color your world" series of geometric abstracts, many of which are impressionistic landscapes.
Her work is in numerous corporate collections, many of which were commissioned series, and is in the municipal collections of the City of Raleigh and the City of Charleston.
Exhibition history is extensive and includes the North Carolina Museum of Art, The Coker Gallery (Roseville, CA), Visual Art Exchange, The United Arts Council, Lee Hansley Gallery, Durham Convention Center, 311 Gallery (which she sold in late 2014), Cameron Art Museum (Wilmington, NC), Davidson College, Miriam Preston Block Gallery, and other regional venues.
Current galleries include Thibault Gallery (Beaufort SC), Art Mecca of Charleston (SC) and the Seaworthy Gallery (Hatteras NC)
I am obsessed with color and composition, and the spiritual qualities of light. If I couldnt paint, Id probably write stories. But we are surrounded by words today, and I think we need the magic of art more than ever. Art takes us to the places that words cant describe, away into parts of our minds and hearts we forget about without it.
